the week in review

I posted the preceeding quote in honor of the July 2008 Bar examinees, who concluded testing yesterday afternoon.  Gerry Spence is a curious legal figure.  He is sort of like the Liberace of American Jurisprudence, in that his curious celebrity status is more attributed to his unique character than actual coherent achievement.

I agree with his statement about the bar exam, despite not agreeing with pretty much anything else he says - largely because it’s gibberish:

Most lawyers know little about classical literature and history, have never written a poem, have never painted a picture, have never stood before an audience and sung a song, have never been permitted to confess their pain or their love, and, in short, have been denied the stuff of personhood.

Um.  What?  One time I went to Art Camp and made a blue ceramic cactus that had purple hearts instead of needles.  And one time I wrote a poem and submitted it to Highlights but they didn’t publish it and I think my mom has never forgiven them or read Highlights since.  I still read it at the doctor’s office.

Also, the earthquake.  Ya know, it’s nothing like the movies.  In the movies, earthquakes always make noise.  There’s that actual rumbling sound and everything shakes.  Precious Moments figurines fall from the mantle; their cherubic countenances shatter.

In “real life” it’s a completely silent process.  And it’s not shakey, it’s kinda wavey.  Like walking in a bounce house.  And the newer tall office buildings, like the one I work in, are built on casters?  Or something?  So it kinda feels like the buidling is hula-hooping.  In addition to the bounce house thing.

When it happened I was on the phone with an opposing counsel that I don’t particularly like.  I feel like we bonded.

Also, there are four teenage girls at my house.  I’ll take my chances with the earthquake thank you.
